Ah, camellias! Actually there were 2 big bushes growing into each other on the west side of the porch. And about three others over on the east side. Blooms all winter...
Is one of your fall-bloomers a "Yuletide?" Single red flowers?

Light frost yesterday. Leaves falling. I'm off to rake a load of pine straw this afternoon. Camellias love pine straw...

Great memories. I miss my daughters! Too bad we live so far apart, and see each other only every several months or so.

Liz and Dave! Happy first anniversary!

This takes me back!

I don't remember you eating dirt. I must have been too small--or too busy eating pokeberries--to notice.

Last Saturday we squooshed about 20 gallons of applesauce. Our strainer is just like, but not as dignified-sounding as, the Victorio. It is a Squeez-o. Tom and Jessica and Jewel and James came out to help with the project, and then Grandma and Grandpa showed up and chopped apples all afternoon. Come see us and have some!

Currently there is grass growing on our "nice, dark composted earth." I guess it's a bad idea to compost weed seeds. Makes sense. The compost we used this spring was full of tomato seeds and volunteer tomatoes came up in the flower beds. The late summer compost promoted parsley--I have some growing in my newly-transplanted house plants. Our homesteading is more haphazard than methodical: You want some ducks? Sure! We'll take some ducks!

Can't wait to meet the camelias.

North GA. sounds like you can grow things like Denbigh.
Don't worry. your mom didn't learn her growing things smarts at home either.
If it was a good place for azaleas it would be for camelias also -- but the azalea is dead?
